Hotels here are mostly small, in joined canal houses along the Weteringschans and the Vijzelgracht, with steep stairs and a few rooms looking over the water. Rental apartments occupy upper floors above galleries and cafés, reached through narrow street doors. Rooms are compact but characterful, with beams, tall windows and sometimes a view over the Singelgracht toward the museum quarter. In the evenings the streets near the music venue are busy until the show ends, then quickly empty. The side streets of the Weteringbuurt itself are residential and quiet. Visitors often choose this area to be near the museums by day and the concerts by night, and many come back to their room around eleven, still carrying the energy of the evening. Canal-house stairs in this quarter are very steep indeed, sometimes more like ladders than staircases, and luggage is usually carried up by hand. She is used to that climb. What helps is a clear bed, a warm room and a lamp instead of the ceiling light, which the old houses often provide only as a single bright bulb.
