Rooms and doors of Waterlooplein
Accommodation here leans toward rented apartments in post-war blocks and restored houses along the Amstel and the Zwanenburgwal, with a handful of hotels on the edges toward the Blauwbrug. The post-war buildings have lifts, wide landings and bedrooms that are more generous than the canal-house norm. The older houses by the water have the usual steep stairs, but also windows that look straight out over the river and its lit bridges. After an evening performance at the opera house, the square empties quickly, and a reader walking back to a flat on the Amstel meets few people. Metro Waterlooplein is right under the square, which makes it easy for a visitor staying here to reach Zuidas or the RAI for work during the day and be back in the centre within fifteen minutes. The Magere Brug, the white drawbridge lit by hundreds of bulbs, is a short walk upriver. At night its lights reflect in the water all the way to the next bridge.
