Rooms and doors of Vondelpark
The park is the city's shared garden, and the streets that border it borrow their character from it. On the south side, Van Eeghenstraat and Koninginneweg run past villas and mansion flats with gardens backing toward the water; on the north side, Vondelstraat and the edge of Oud-West offer busier streets and smaller apartments above the shops of Overtoom. Hotels are mostly converted villas of a dozen or so rooms, some with windows straight onto the trees, alongside design hotels on Overtoom and near the main entrance. Long-stay visitors often rent flats here precisely because the park absorbs the city's noise. That quiet is useful. After dark the paths empty, the cyclists thin to commuters, and the villa streets fall silent, so a late arrival is heard by nobody and seen, at most, by a passing dog walker. The park itself is no place for a session, and nobody should suggest otherwise; the room overlooking it is ideal.
