Dressing for a Lobby at Midnight

On the wardrobe question nobody asks us and every hotel guest silently worries about: what she will look like crossing the marble.

Of all the anxieties a first booking carries, the lobby is the most durable. A reader can accept the tariff, choose his chapter, warm his room, and still lie awake on the question he is too polite to type: what will she look like walking past the night manager?

The answer is a doctrine, and the house enforces it as seriously as any technique. She will look like the hotel's other guests, only slightly better finished. Dark tailoring or a good coat, depending on the season. Shoes that can cross marble without announcing themselves. One bag, structured, adult, the kind that could hold a laptop and holds towels instead. Hair and face done to the standard of a woman meeting a friend at the bar, not a woman going to work. The total effect is calibrated to a precise target: the glance that slides off.

Why midnight is the easy shift

Counter-intuitively, the small hours are the simplest to dress for. A midnight lobby already contains returning theatre-goers, delayed arrivals off the last Schiphol train, guests drifting down for a nightcap, a population of the elegantly unexplained. Our women simply join it. The harder brief is 3pm on a Tuesday, when a lobby empties and anyone crossing it becomes legible; afternoon bookings get flatter shoes, plainer coats, and the pace of a woman with a meeting upstairs.

What is never worn matters as much. Nothing that photographs as costume. No perfume that arrives before she does or lingers in a lift for the next guest to read. Nothing the front desk could later describe with confidence beyond dark coat, polite nod. Discretion, correctly done, is not invisibility, it is unmemorability, which is harder and more useful.

The bag, inventoried

Since the bag does the heaviest lifting, it earns a paragraph. Inside, rolled with a cabin crew's economy: linens and towels, the oils or the gel with its sheet depending on the chapter booked, and the small kit of warmth, everything your room will need and nothing it will keep. The bag arrives full and leaves full. Housekeeping's morning inventory matches the evening's exactly, which is the only review the house reads with real interest.

So retire the lobby worry. It is our profession's oldest exam, and the fourteen have been passing it nightly for years, in marble, in boutique brick, and up apartment staircases where the only observer is a cat. The knock on your door is the last unremarkable thing that will happen all evening. That is the design.
