Rooms and doors of Eastern Docklands
Homes here are modern by Amsterdam standards, which means lifts, wide stairwells, large windows and bathrooms with proper showers. Many apartments look straight over the water, and some of the rental houses on Borneo have their own small roof terrace. A few hotels, several of them in converted harbour buildings, line the Oostelijke Handelskade and the waterfront. Streets are quiet at night; the islands are residential and have no nightlife beyond a handful of restaurants that close by eleven. Wind comes in off the IJ and can make a short walk from the tram stop feel colder than the forecast suggests. Taxis and the number 26 tram connect the islands to Centraal Station in a few minutes. Visitors who stay here often want a calm base that is close to the centre without being part of it, and the evenings reflect that. A reader who has spent the day in museums and the evening at the concert hall on the waterfront can be back in his apartment within ten minutes of the final applause, which leaves plenty of evening for a booking.
